- Written by Brian Doyle (SwimCycleRun.com) with contributions by Peter Kern (PB3 Coaching)
The 2013 Irish triathlon season is well underway with a number of National Series races held so far. At this stage it is fitting to surmise who are the female triathletes expected to podium throughout the year.
The number of female athletes at the top of triathlon in Ireland is greater than ever before. This is a great development for triathlon in Ireland and a lot of credit for this is down to the people running the clubs in Ireland and the good coaching that is available.
Based on past performance and form so far this year, these are some of the female triathletes (in alphabetical order) to watch out for 2013. Some have been regular faces on the podium for a number of seasons now, some have been on the radar for the last one or two seasons and others burst onto the scene this year.
These are the females that you will want to see, or perhaps not, at the start line this season!!!Amy Wolfe
Amy Wolfe might race a few races here and will most likely race the national championship races despite spending most of the season racing at ETU an ITU level. Amy’s ITU level swim is a cut above everybody in Ireland apart from Aileen Morrison. Her experience on the French grandprix circuit for her team ‘La Rochell’, will stand to her making her a formidable opponent for the domestic competition. Amy raced last week at Lough Cultra Tri where she was first female, in the top 10 overall and only 6 minutes behind legendary Ironman Matt Malloy.

Andree has been on the tri scene for a number of years now, she was 4th in the National Series in 2011 & 2012 so she may have hopes of breaking into the top three this year.
Andree has shown some good early season form with a 3rd place in the North Tipp Sprint National Series race and 1st at the Killaloe Duathlon. You can expect to see this consistent athlete taking more podiums this season.

Anna Crooks - GoTri.ie
Anna, a trainee physical therapist, when not putting clients through pain on the massage table, likes to put the hurt on her competitors around the country in duathlons and triathlons. She has had many great results, winning the 2011 Irish Duathlon Championship and she was the runner up in 2012 & 2013. Anna has had some great results in triathlon last year coming 1st at the Caroline Kearny Triathlon and 1st at the Brian Boru Sprint Tri. These good results earned her 5th placeoverall in the National series. Anna is coached by GoTri.ie and has spent the winter working hard on improving her bike speed that, relative to her good swim and top-notch run, was not to the same level. This season it has paid off and she had a really fantastic win at the TriAthy Olympic distance and the North Tipp Sprint. Expect to see Anna racing very well this year; she should have the other females looking nervously over their shoulders during the run.

Aoife Lynch – Pulse
Aoife has been one of Irelands top females for a number of years now and it is very rare that she is off the podium. Aoife was runner up in the National Series in 2010 and 2011 and spent a lot of 2012 kicking ass on the Continent where she got 2nd at the Lisbon International 70.3 Distance Triathlon. It is fair to say that she is very strong in each of the 3 disciplines and she lays down bike times that a lot of strong guys would be proud of. This year Aoife plans to go to some races and enjoy herself without any specific goals in mind, but can a true competitor like her ever take it easy… we don’t think so. Expect to see her standing on a few podiums.

2nd Irish Half Distance Triathlon Championships 2012

Derval Devaney - Belpark
Derval has been the dominant female in Adventures Racing over the last few years, winning races such as WAR, Gaelforce and the Irish National Adventure Race Series Championships in 2010. She is now being coached by Kevin Keane, so this season expect her to be stronger than ever. She is a graceful runner and a strong cyclist, and earlier this year, she ‘chicked’ a load of the boys at the Piranha – Belpark TT series. Expect to see her embarrassing men on two wheels, allover Ireland this summer.
1st Drogheda Duathlon 2013
1st Connemara Adventure Challenge 2011
1st Irish Adventure Race Series 2010
Jen Duffy – B2R/Piranha
Jen, along with Aofie Lynch, has been consistently among the top two females in Ireland over the last few years. When she turns up at race it is usually just a matter of seeing which particular step on the podium she will take on that day. Last year she won the Irish Middle Distance championship and was the 3rd (1st amateur) female at Galway 70.3 Ironman, beating a few pro’s in the process. While not weak in any of the three disciplines, she is particularly strong on the bike and run. Jen is currently coached by Eanna McGrath and after defending her Irish Middle Distance title already this year, her next goal is the Ironman 70.3 Championship in Las Vegas in September. Jen won the National Series in 2011 but retaking her crown is unlikely to be a goal for her this year. Expect to see her using some of the races around the country to keep sharp and have fun.

Jennifer O’Connell - T3
This Limerick born athlete is the heart and soul of T3 tri club. Cryptically described by her coach Peter Kern as “an artist among athletes” she can always be seen racing with a smile. She has a very strong swim and a good bike and it will be hard for most girls to beat her into T2. She looked strong at the middle distance championships leading the race for a while before pulling out on the bike, so expect her to get some results at olympic distances this summer where her strong swim will be key.

1st Hell of the West 2012
1st Joey Hannon Olympic Triathlon 2012

Joyce Wolfe – Cork Triathlon Club/Tríspórt
Joyce is a very brave competitor with a strong mental game, seven weeks after breaking her jaw during a crash at the Mallorca 70.3, she went to Ironman Austria 2011 and set the new Irish Female Ironman Record with a time of 9:15:42 (58mins for 3.8km swim, 5:04 for 180km cycle and 3:07 for 42km run). Earlier this season Joyce came 5th at the National Duathlon Championships while preparing for Ironman Lanzarote. On 18th May she completed the very hilly and windy Ironman Lanzarote course in a time of 10:31.45 which was the 5th best time among the female competitors.
1st Joey Hannon Olympic Triathlon 2013
Katie Cooke – Cork Tri/VeloRevolution
Katie has won many of races around the southern parts of Ireland where her strong swim usually allows her to lead right from the water through to the end. Her good bike and solid run means it is often difficult for the other females to catch her once she gets away. The Lost Sheep Triathlon win is particular impressive as it is a tough race and forced many seasoned Ironman athletes to abandon from the sea.

Kim has had a great start to the 2013 season and is currently sitting in top spot on the National Series rankings after getting some great early season results such as 2st at the Valentia Sprint. Expect to see Kim putting her strong bike and run to good use at Kilkee and Mourne to capture even more points.

3rd Naas Duathlon 2013
1st Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon 2012
Máire-Triona Keane –T3/swimcyclerun.com
Máire-Triona was an avid runner for a few years, but on picking up a foot injury, she ended up spending long hours on her turbo trainer riding to ‘Sufferfest’ training videos. After gaining a lot of bike fitness she put it to good use and entered some duathlons, she turned out to be quiet good making the podium at the Runways Duathlon and Ashford Duathlon in 2012.
For 2013 she wanted to give triathlon a good go and is now being coached by Peter Kern who has high hopes for her. Máire-Triona’s main strengths are her bike and run so expect to see her running hard and hunting down the females in front of her.

Rachel Clancy – Limerick Tri/swimcyclerun.com
Rachel is an Irish National Basketball player and last year dipped into triathlon after being inspired by Ger Hartman’s book. She was quickly bitten by the triathlon-bug and this year has decided to take things more seriously. She is coached by Mark Dempsey and has set herself the goals of finishing as high as possible in the National Series and having a strong race at the Half-Ironman World Championships in Las Vegas in September. Rachel is very balanced across the 3 disciplines and can look forward to making good gains as she gets more experience.

Rachel Glendon – B2R/Orwell WheelersCycling Club
Rachel has been a successful triathlete for a number of years. This year she is training with Eanna McGrath so expect to see her faster than ever. Rachel has a great swim and a strong bike, which she put to good use earlier this season to get 3rd at the Irish Middle Distance Championships. She is the current Female Leinster Hill Climb Champion, which as the name suggests involves cycling up a very long steep hill as fast as you can. It is safe to say she is a very determined competitor.

Vanessa Fenton – 3DTri/Wheelworx
Vanessa is another Peter Kern coached athlete and was runner up in the 2012 Women’s National Series after a great season. She won many big races such as the TriAthlone Sprint, Tri on Mhi and won both the TriAthy Olympic and Sprint on two consecutive days. This female is as tough as they come. Vanessa is an out and out ‘fish’ and can often been seen leading the fast lane during swim sessions while wearing a ‘drag suit’ to slow her down. This allied with her strong bike is usually enough to see her home at the pointy end of the field.
