Derval Devaney : An Introduction

I’ve had an on-off relationship with triathlon, having first started many years ago when Gavin Noble was in nappies!

Intially I did tris to make friends in sport. And I loved swimming in the sea. But as I got better I became more competitive. Despite this I’ve always believed that there’s no point in competing unless it’s fun.

When I first got in to the sport, I was just happy to compete and be social, chasing podiums was not my goal but the bike was always my strong point.

After a few years of racing I fell out of doing triathlons but living in Westport, Co Mayo, I became introduced to adventure racing – Gaelforce was on my doorstep and I went along one year to support a friend and thought, “I want to do this next year.” Twelve months later I finished third in the same race. That was 2009, the following year I won Gaelforce and competed in a some more adventure races.  I began to try my luck with a few triathlons again. Soon I was running down mountains less and getting in to the pool more.

Beast of the East is my favourite race, with its calm swim, not too technical bike and hilly run. I’ve yet to finish it but I’m hoping it’s third time lucky after crashing out last year and having to retire midway on my debut.

My approach to training is simple – consistency is key. Even when you’re not feeling great you just have to get the work done. I love hill reps on the bike and my coach keeps threatening that he is going to enter me in to the National Hill Climbing Championships at the end of the season!!

Because I’ve moved around with my job a lot over the years, I think I hold the record for triathlon club membership – I’ve been a member of six - Cork, Galway, Liquid Motion,Pulse West, TríSport and Belpark!

I'm delighted to be sponsored by "SwimCycleRun.com"  ... its been a long winter, the summer has finally arrived ...... lets see what the 2013 tri season brings
